Storm Special Needs Program

Program Overview

South Jersey Storm is pleased to offer “Twisters,” an all star competitive special needs cheerleading team consisting of talented athletes from the tri-state area who are differently-abled.  Guided by highly-qualified USASF coaches, as well as volunteers who are athletes and/or individuals in the special education field, the Twisters practice once per week from September through April, and perform at approximately five local competitions.  In order to be eligible for the Twisters’ team, the athlete must have an IEP in place or have a medical diagnosis that meets the criteria of special needs (i.e. Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, etc.).  Athletes mobile or in wheelchairs are welcome to join our South Jersey Storm Twisters family; we love to see all athletes shine!

Practices for Twisters are mandatory – just like any other allstar cheerleading team at SJS – and it shows on the mat when they perform … unassisted … to a crowd of adoring fans.  Allowing your child to be an athlete on Twisters is a very enriching experience; building life skills, teaching accountability, working on fine motor and gross motor skills, socialization and, the best part – FRIENDSHIPS!!  The athletes on this team accomplish a great deal during their season and we hope to continue to grow this special family.

Twisters athletes also have the option to do a monthly tumble class just for their team members; please ask about how your athlete will benefit from this extra instruction.  The Twisters’ tumble class is year-round, typically on a Thursday night (depending upon athlete enrollment/availability, the night could change).
